A typical acupuncture session begins with a Health Status Consultation that can take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. It usually includes a review of the patient's physical symptoms, an evaluation of the patient's physical appearance and demeanor, an assessment of diet and lifestyle, and observations of the pulse and tongue. This enables the acupuncturist to identify the imbalance that lies at the root of the disorder, and then to formulate an appropriate treatment plan.
A typical acupuncture treatment may last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. When receiving acupuncture, the patient generally lies on their back, front or side, depending on which part of the body is being treated. In some cases, it may be necessary to sit in a chair. Based on the diagnosis, the practitioner selects the appropriate acupuncture points where the needles will be inserted.
All practitioners use sterilized, disposable acupuncture needles. The needles are not much thicker than a human hair. After locating the appropriate acupuncture point on the body, the practitioner cleans the site with alcohol and gently inserts the needle.
Initially, the patient may feel a tingling, dull, heavy or achy feeling around the needle or energy pathway which normally subsides within a few minutes. It is essential for the patient to provide constant feedback to the practitioner so the treatment can be adjusted or modified to meet their individual needs. After a treatment the patient is normally calm and relaxed, and may experience a temporary feeling of fatigue or light headedness.
Treatment progress is discussed between the patient and practitioner on a regular basis to allow for changes in treatment strategies that reflect the patient's evolving condition. This open dialogue also allows the practitioner to provide emotional support to those patients that need it.
One of the most important aspects of acupuncture is an open and trusting relationship between the practitioner and the patient. Because treatment programs are developed in partnership with the patient, and usually consist of a series of treatments spread over several days or weeks, choosing a qualified practitioner that you trust and feel comfortable with is important.
As the condition improves, the frequency of visits is gradually reduced until the treatment program is concluded. The total number of treatments required, and the rate of progress, depends on the condition being treated and the individual patient.
Pain is the body’s warning alarm. It tells you something is wrong. If you ignore your body’s alarm, similarly to the fire alarm in your house, severe problems can soon occur.
The Fredericton Wellness Clinic has been treating various pain conditions from lower back to knee pain with great success since 1996. The clinic integrates acupuncture, acupressure massage and herbal medicine to effectively reduce or resolve pain caused by disorders such as:
Acupuncture helps prevent pain by acting on the sympathetic nervous system and by stimulating the body to produce biochemical substances, such as endorphins, to help reduce pain. In addition, Chinese Herbal Formulas have analgesic properties and help move the Qi and blood, reducing levels of pain.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine when energy flows freely within the body it remains healthy. If the energy stagnates the energy balance is disrupted and pain and disease will eventually appear. By releasing the blockage of energy with the application of acupressure, acupuncture and herbal medicine, the natural balance of the body is restored and the pain diminishes or disappears.
Infertility is generally defined as an inability to conceive after a year or more of regular sexual activity without using birth control. Infertility can stem from functional as well as structural problems. Low sperm count in males or an irregular menstrual cycle in females are a definite hindrance to fertility.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that regulation of the menstrual cycle is the primary means of treating common, and often complex, women’s health issues. This is accomplished by determining the pattern of imbalance. The patient is then treated according to her individual condition and the phase of the menstrual cycle.
Getting pregnant naturally is often a matter of clearing the system of stagnation, increasing the blood supply to the ovaries, and restoring a level of general health. It is preferable to treat the man and the woman. Men are very easy to treat - sperm counts can improve very quickly.
To obtain the best treatment outcomes, Acupuncture is combined with Herbal Medicine and dietary recommendations. This is a relatively non-invasive approach which often offers a better success rate than traditional methods for significantly less cost.
TCM has been known to:
In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
The use of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Formulas can enhance IVF results in four ways:
When ovaries are functioning well, they are more responsive to stimulation by the Follicle Stimulation Hormone (FSH) and Estrogen levels will be high. High estrogen levels encourage the development of the lining of the uterus, stimulate more follicles and possibly contribute to better quality eggs.
Everyone suffers from anxiety from time to time. But when anxiety takes over with physical symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, heart palpitations and insomnia, it can become a major health issue and severely impact one’s quality of life.
Anxiety is often driven by feelings of worry, fear, loss, or guilt. Often it is difficult to identify the exact origin of these negative emotions.
Prescription drugs can help ease anxiety but may also cause undesirable side effects by increasing the chemical toxicity of the body weakening the liver which, in Chinese Medicine, plays an important role in harmonizing emotions.
Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Qi Gong relaxation exercises provide an effective and non-invasive alternative for the treatment of anxiety by promoting relaxation, strengthening the liver’s ability to harmonize the emotions, and deactivating the analytical brain, which is responsible for anxiety and worry.
Mild to moderate depression responds well to acupuncture, herbs and Qi Gong, which may be combined with conventional medication or used alone under proper supervision. In cases of severe depression, these modalities may be used to enhance conventional therapy.
Quitting smoking is not easy, but you can do it with the help of the Wellness Clinic.
We offer an effective treatment to help people quit smoking that combines Laser Auricular Therapy, Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. The treatment helps to reduce cravings by balancing your body's brain chemistry. It also calms the mind and eases anxiety, and is effective in helping heal the damage caused by smoking.
Canadian researchers, whose findings appeared in the American Journal of Medicine in 2012, looked at 14 international studies that used drug-free methods to help quit smoking.
While the findings questioned the effectiveness of alternative therapies, they also showed that treatments such as acupuncture should serve as options for smokers who first try standard methods such as nicotine-replacement, medications and behavioral counseling. Some studies showed that smokers who used acupuncture to quit were more than three times as likely to be tobacco-free six months to a year down the road.
Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine have helped many people quit smoking. From our experience, an average of one to three sessions may be required to stop smoking. With the integrated Laser, Acupuncture and Herbal Treatments offered at the Wellness Clinic, many smokers quit after one session.
However, treatments do not work as well for everyone. Some patients may require additional treatments. The only way to find out if it works for you is to try it. Not smoking even for a short period of time will largely cover the cost of treatment.
Ask yourself why you wish to quit smoking. If your response is that you truly wish to make a change in your life and quit this habit, the results of treatment are far better.
Total cost is $300 which includes the consultation, laser therapy, semi-permanent ear needles and Smoke Free herbal formula. Booster treatments when required are offered at half price.
The cost of treatment is covered by most private health care plans under acupuncture.
Acupressure Massage uses both fingers and thumbs to press key points on the surface of the skin stimulating the body’s natural self-curative abilities. These points are located on meridians, or energy pathways, the same ones used in acupuncture. When pressed, they release muscular tension, promoting the circulation of blood and vital energy.
Acupressure helps reduce tension and constrictions before they develop into a disease. It can help relieve a number of conditions such as headaches, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, tension due to stress, menstrual cramps, constipation, and indigestion.
MyoFascial Release is the physical manipulation of the body's connective tissue or fascia. This tissue layer connects every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, and organ in the body. Many of the meridians or energy pathways used in Traditional Chinese Medicine pass through the fascial layer.
During treatment, long, stretching strokes of the hands and forearms are applied to various parts of the body opening fascial restrictions. Patients experience long-term relief of pain and tension due to injury and stress. This powerful technique is very good at balancing the body's musculo-skeletal system. It is also effective in releasing deep rooted emotional pain and trauma.
Energy Balancing opens blockages in the body's internal energy field, thus restoring the flow of Qi or bio-energy. The Wellness Clinic offers Energy Healing sessions based on the traditions of Qi Gong, Reiki and Healing Touch.
Qi or Energy Healing facilitates a deep sense of calm and relaxation. It brings about positive changes in the physical body, ultimately improving the body’s ability to heal itself.
Remedial exercises are provided as required which include postural training, strengthening and stretching exercises, as well as relaxed breathing and visualization exercises.
